Recipe: Caramel-Bottom French Toast Bake

Ingredients:

For the Caramel Layer:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

For the French Toast:

  • 1 loaf French bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup until smooth.
  3. Pour the caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  4. Spread the bread cubes evenly over the caramel layer.
  5. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  8. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until golden brown and set.
  9. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  10. Invert portions onto plates so the caramel layer is on top.

Cooking Tips:

  • Day-old bread works best because it absorbs more custard.
  • Let the casserole rest after baking for easier serving.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Top with fresh berries.
  • Add whipped cream.
  • Drizzle with extra maple syrup.
